Rovaniemi History of Rovaniemi

The town's history goes back 8 000 years and there has probably been permanent settlements in the Rovaniemi area since the Stone Age. The exploitation of Lapland's natural resources in the 1800s speeded up Rovaniemi’s growing and make Rovaniemi became the business center of the Lapland. Gold fever and wide logging sites did bring thousands of people to Lapland.

 The Second World War brought total destruction to Rovaniemi. Germans managed to cause significant damage to Rovaniemi, they burned and destroyed almost everything in their sights and the Rovaniemi market town was left with only 17 buildings.
